About Stevie Russell

Hi, I’m Stevie — an artist and illustrator guided by the ocean, imagination, and a love of making ideas come alive.

My work moves between watercolour, ink, digital media, and occasional found materials, often layered together to create pieces that feel playful, textured, and quietly surprising. I’m drawn to the space where storytelling meets visual curiosity — where a flat surface can feel dimensional, and an image can hint at a bigger world beyond the frame.

Based in coastal Queensland, the ocean shapes both my subject matter and my way of working. Shells, shifting tides, coastal botanicals, and underwater forms weave their way through my art, as invitations to explore. I’m interested in how nature moves and feels, not just how it looks.

Art, Story & Process

I love developing a visual concept and then teaching myself whatever skills are needed to bring it to life. Much of my practice sits at the intersection of traditional and digital techniques, where I build work slowly through layers — combining hand-painted elements, digital refinement, and mixed materials to create depth, texture, and a sense of quiet illusion.

This layered approach flows across everything I make, from original artworks and shell pieces to illustration, prints, and children’s book imagery. Storytelling is at the heart of it all — sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle — but always present.

& Children’s Work

Children’s stories and spaces are an important part of my practice. I create illustrations and artworks that invite curiosity, gentleness, and imagination — whether that’s on a page, a wall, or within a shared community setting.

Inspired by childhood wonder, my work spans picture books, playful commissions, and family-friendly creative experiences, including readings and collaborative events. I aim to create visual worlds that feel welcoming, expressive, and full of possibility.

Community & Connection

Community is an integral part of my creative life. I value opportunities where art brings people together — connecting artists with the public, creating accessible creative experiences, and contributing to shared spaces through visual storytelling.

My work has been featured in exhibitions, community projects, libraries, galleries, and public-facing creative spaces across coastal Queensland. From collaborative projects and public artworks, to family-friendly events, readings, and creative partnerships, I believe art works best when it’s lived with, not just looked at.

What Guides Me

My work is about noticing — small details, quiet magic, and the stories hidden in everyday moments. Whether it’s a shell, a splash of colour, or an idea waiting to take shape, I’m always following curiosity and seeing where it leads.
